Toxins in Your Environment
You have already been exposed to an unbelievable amount and variety of environmental toxins just from living in our modern world. Toxic chemicals are used in almost every facet of our life today – from growing and making our food to building our homes and furniture.
Most of us are aware that environmental pollution comes from factories, farms and cars. But did you know that the air in our homes is now 2-10 times more polluted than the outside air?
Consumer products including household cleaners, cosmetics, paint, books, fabrics, and even our pots and pans, are all sources of toxic exposure.
Toxic Soup
More than 70,000 of these toxins have been invented and introduced since the 1950’s. Most of them have not been tested for safety (see EPA article.)
In modern industry, a chemical is safe unless proven harmful. The burden of proof is put on the government instead of the corporations manufacturing these toxins. It is very difficult to adequately test for long-term effects on human health. When chemical reactions occur between these substances in the environment and in our bodies they create even more harmful compounds. Testing for the effects of a toxic soup with 70,000 ingredients is impossible!
Many of these environmental toxins are extremely persistent and remain in the environment even after their use has been stopped. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are industrial chemicals that cause cancer and brain damage in fetuses and were banned in the US decades ago. However, they remain a major environmental pollutant today. They are most commonly found in farm-raised Salmon that absorb the PCBs from the environment.
Dichloro-Diphenyl-Trichloroethane, well-known as DDT, is a synthetic pesticide that was banned in 1972. Its environmental and health dangers were exposed in the book Silent Spring by American biologist Rachel Carson.
Yet DDT is still present in the tissue of most Americans today.
Exposure to chemicals has been linked to symptoms like headaches, nausea, fatigue, memory loss, joint pain, depression and insomnia. Over time, these toxins build up to create disease. Research shows that 30 to as much as 95 percent of cancer is caused by diet and environmental toxins.
Although it is not realistic to completely avoid these chemicals since they are present in the air we breathe and the water we drink, we can reduce our exposure. We get to choose what we put in our bodies and what we bring into our homes. Consumer products are the leading cause of indoor pollution. The Whole Body Detox Diet guides you through the steps to clean out toxic accumulation and cut down on future exposure through choosing clean foods and natural products.
Toxins cause Disease
Cancer is the main health risk associated with the chemicals in our environment. As we spend billions of dollars looking for the “cure” to cancer, modern industry is dumping the primary cause of cancer into our food, air and water supply.
Environmental toxins also contribute to or cause the following health conditions:
- Impaired fetal development
- Reproductive disorders
- Infertility
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Nerve damage
- Birth defects
- Endocrine disorders
- Liver disorders
- Skin disorders
- Respiratory disease
- Heart disease
- Neurological disorders
- Alzheimer's disease
- Obesity/Weight Gain
Sources include:
- Farm raised salmon (PCBs)
- Non-organic foods (pesticides, heavy metals)
- Bug sprays (pesticides, heavy metals)
- Peanuts, wheat, corn and alcoholic beverages (mycotoxins, a fungus from mold)
- Old buildings (mycotoxins)
- Plastic wrap, plastic bottles, plastic food storage containers (phthalates)
- Drinking water (chlorine, volatile organic compounds - VOCs, heavy metals, chloroform)
- Carpet, paints, deodorants, cleaning fluids, varnishes, cosmetics, dry cleaned clothing, moth repellants, air fresheners (VOCs)
- Animal fats (dioxins)
- Insulation on floors, ceilings, water pipes and healing ducts from the 1950s to 1970s (asbestos)
- Fish (heavy metals)
- Vaccines (heavy metals)
- Building materials, including pressure treated wood (heavy metals)
- Antiperspirant (heavy metals)
- Dental amalgams (heavy metals)
- Household cleaners (formaldehyde, chlorine)
- Cosmetics and personal care products (formaldehyde, dioxins, VOCs)

How to Limit Your Exposure to Toxins
- Eat whole, unprocessed, organic foods as much as possible.
- Filter your water (for drinking, cooking and bathing).
- Choose natural cleaning supplies and personal care products.
- Say no to vaccines preserved with
thimerosal
(mercury).
- Safely remove amalgam fillings and/or choose a non-amalgam alternative for new fillings.
- Treat your home and garden naturally (use organic fertilizers, soil and natural pest control methods).
- Avoid plastics in food preparation and water storage (never microwave your food in a plastic container…in fact, skip microwaving altogether).
- Seek out natural alternatives to products from highly polluting industries.
- Choose natural building materials when building or remodeling your home.
- Avoid or limit use of peanuts, wheat, dairy and corn.
- Follow the The Whole Body Detox Diet program and discover how delicious and joyful life can be!
