Taking supplements during detox?

by Jazmine

Your website and all the info is just fabulous! I do have a question about supplements. I'm looking for your suggestions on what supplements are good to talk while doing a 10 day detox. I once did a 3 week fruit and veggie detox using a series of standard process vitamins and protein powder. Maybe this is the best to stick with using these vitamins but wanted to get your recommendation first. I'm thinking I should for sure use some vitamins while I detox rather then not have any and just do whole foods.

Answer: That is a great question and we're glad this site is helpful for you. There are many levels to answering this question and we'll touch on them each as best as possible.

Vitamins and supplements (meaning non-whole foods pills, powders or potions) are, for the most part, unnatural fabrications and can be counterproductive during this type of detox. There are many types of supplements and the cheaper varieties are much more detrimental than others. However, even the highest quality vitamin supplements have been isolated from their natural source. They have been separated from the synergistic compounds that make up a whole food. Nutritional science doesn't even come close to understanding all of the complex interactions that take place between our bodies and the natural whole foods that are designed by nature to nourish them. Many vitamins and minerals are not even absorbable in their isolated form. Some new research studies have even shown that synthetic vitamin supplements increase damaging free radical activity by binding with and inactivating the antioxidants needed to fight the disease-causing free radicals.

So during your detox, you are aiming to give your body 100% natural whole nourishment and to support your organs in clearing stored toxins. Synthetic vitamins add an extra load for your liver and kidneys while providing you with a fraction of the nourishment you can receive through natural whole foods.

That said, there are many powerful natural foods you can supplement your diet with during your detox. These living foods and super foods make sure you're getting a wide spectrum of nourishment. The herbs, superfoods and natural supplements we recommend are designed to fill out your detox diet and keep you feeling healthy and strong. Vitamineral Green is a great natural whole food supplement made from a wide variety of raw grasses, algaes and probiotics. Mix it into your green smoothie for an added morning boost or just mix it with water or 100% natural juice for a quick dose of nourishment.

Herbs such as nettles and oatstraw can provide high quality absorbable calcium and iron as well as many other vitamins and minerals. You can find these in your health food store or visit Mountain Rose Herbs online for a reliable source of high quality herbs.

Super foods are a great source of high quality antioxidants, protein, and an exceptionally potent source of many vitamins and minerals that your body needs. Visit your health food store or shop online in our Whole Body Detox Diet Store for potent foods like hemp protein powder, goji berries, spirulina powder, or maca powder.

Here are some other supplemental food examples:

Spirulina and other microalgaes - high protein, wide spectrum of minerals and vitamins
Bee Pollen, raw honey and royal jelly - B12, protein
Hemp seeds/powder/oil and Flax seeds/meal/oil- fiber, omega 3 EFAs, protein, vitamins, minerals
Omega 3 oil supplement- borage oil, evening primrose, krill oil, etc.

Your detox is a good opportunity to give your body a break and let it regain a natural balance. If you have been taking fabricated vitamins on a regular basis, we recommend taking a break from them during your detox. If you feed yourself nourishing whole foods throughout your detox and supplement with natural superfoods and herbs you won't be missing anything.

The only supplemental vitamin, in isolated form, that many long-term vegans require is vitamin B12. This vitamin is found in animal products and is less abundant in plant foods. But this vitamin is accumulated in the body and so it's not an issue when you go without animal products for a short time like a 10 day detox.
