Chewy Carob Sugar Free Brownies
Sugar free brownies made with carob and date sugar are a whole foods version of the classic treat. Their mellow sweetness and rich warmth can help stave off sugar cravings during your detox. For an extra special treat, enjoy them along side a serving of one of our delicious sugar free ice cream recipes. Carob is often used as a chocolate substitute. But if you are a chocolate fan you’ll be quick to notice that it has quite a different flavor than chocolate. Carob is naturally sweet and delicious in its own right. High in calcium and other minerals, it supports an alkaline condition in your body and healthy digestion.
In addition to the natural sweetness of carob, these sugar free brownies are sweetened with date sugar and brown rice syrup. Natural sweeteners are more mild than sugar. Using them to sweeten your desserts will help you adjust your desire for sweets to a more moderate level and overcome sugar cravings. Ingredients: (use organic whenever possible) - 2/3 cup date sugar
- 2/3 cup rice syrup
- 1/3 cup safflower oil
- 2 tablespoons flax seeds (ground and mixed into 4 tablespoons of water)
- ¾ cup carob powder
- ½ teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- ¾ cup water or apple juice
- ½ cup millet
- ½ cup quinoa
- 1/3 cup arrowroot
- ½ teaspoon baking soda
- pinch of sea salt
- ½ cup crushed walnuts (optional)
Directions:- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine date sugar, rice syrup and safflower oil in a large bowl. Stir well.
- Grind flax seeds into a meal in your coffee grinder or Vita-Mix blender. Mix with 4 tablespoons of water and then stir into the date sugar mixture. Stir until well combined.
- Add carob, cinnamon, vanilla and water or juice. Stir well.
- Grind millet and quinoa into a fine flour using your coffee grinder or Vita-Mix blender.
- Combine these flours with arrowroot powder, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet and stir well.
- Fold in the crushed walnuts.
- Bake in a lightly oiled 9x13” baking pan for 30 minutes. Test with a knife or toothpick - when it comes out clean it is done.
