Proactive Self Care for Radiation Poisoning

Maintaining Our Health in a Changing World

Posted April 14, 2011
Fukushima Nuclear Crisis People all over the world are concerned about radiation poisoning after last month’s devastating earthquake in Japan and the damage done to the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. The governments and mainstream media are reporting that there will be no serious long term or widespread effects from this event. But many independent media sources, alternative health professionals and concerned individuals believe that this event and its fallout will have significant environmental and health impacts.

I’ve taken the time to dive into this information to the best of my ability and have gathered some information to help you understand the situation at hand and to provide you with practical tools for protecting yourself and your family from radiation poisoning. As always, my approach is to look at all the information available and filter it through the lenses of simplicity, common sense and self responsibility.

I believe that we have to look out for ourselves and each other. Our governments and the media are not designed to look out for us. The information we need is all there; it’s just buried in a mess of misinformation and it’s not being shared with the masses. So I have gathered what I can for myself and my family and now I’m sharing it with you. I ask you to read through what I have presented, check it against your own inner knowing and follow the links for further research, if you are so inclined. If this information resonates with you please use it and share it with your loved ones. This is our grassroots natural health defense system!

The Fukushima Nuclear Crisis is Serious, Out of Control and Will Likely Have Significant Long Term Effects

The Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant crisis resulting from last month’s 9.0 earthquake is proving to be one of the most serious nuclear disasters in history. Japanese agencies have been conservative in their assessment of the severity of this situation, at first claiming it to be a level 4 under the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES). Last week the rating was raised to a 5 and, as of April 12th, the rating has now been raised to a level 7, the highest on the INES scale and equivalent to the 1986 Chernobyl crisis1. "Radiation is continuing to leak out of the reactors. The situation is not stable at all," says Dr. Michio Kaku, professor of theoretical physics at the City University of New York and the City College of New York. "The slightest disturbance could set off a full-scale meltdown at three nuclear power stations, far beyond what we saw at Chernobyl."13

In the month following the damage caused by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11th Japanese engineers and plant workers have been desperately struggling to get the crisis under control. Failures in cooling systems have created serious and compounding problems at the plant, including massive hydrogen explosions, fires, leakages, and the radioactive contamination of millions of gallons of water. (for a detailed description of the events that occurred at the plant in the days after the earthquake please see Anatomy of a Nuclear Crisis: A Chronology of Fukushima2) radiation poisoning

Elizabeth Grossman of Environment 360 reports that “thousands of tons of radioactively contaminated water have then been released from the Fukushima complex into the ocean.” Further, “The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has reported that seawater containing radioactive iodine-131 at 5 million times the legal limit has been detected near the plant. According to the Japanese news service, NHK, a recent sample also contained 1.1 million times the legal level of radioactive cesium-137. In addition, atmospheric fallout from the damaged reactors is contaminating the ocean as prevailing winds carry radioactivity out over the Pacific.”3 Officials claim that the radioactive material will be diluted to harmless levels in the ocean, but science and logic say that this much radioactive material will have a notable effect on marine health and the food chain.

At this point (a month after the catastrophic earthquake) the crisis is actively persisting as the reactors continue to produce and discharge massive amounts of radioactive material with no viable solution in sight. We, as humans, are dealing with technologies that we can’t control with the potential for devastating long term effects we can’t even begin to calculate. We are like children playing with fire. We can’t accurately determine the full effects of radiation poisoning while they appear to persist for longer than we’ve playing with this type of fire. Even now, 25 years after the Chernobyl disaster, new environmental and health consequences are still being discovered4 and the damaged reactor continues to be dangerously radioactive.5 These simple facts lead me to believe that we are only scratching the surface of the devastation that the Fukushima disaster could elicit. radiation poisoning

Fukushima is Just One of the Many Sources of Increased Radioactive Pollution…but It’s a Big One.

Since the 1960s radioactive pollution has been released into the environment from numerous sources. Of course, the most publicized and concentrated examples of radiation pollution have been the major nuclear plant accidents like Chernobyl, Three Mile Island and, now, Fukushima. But there are also countless other sources of radiation pollution that get much less publicity. They include nuclear fall-out from depleted uranium ammunition, missiles and bombs, accidents at nuclear weapons sites, nuclear submarine accidents, accidents at sterilization and food radiation facilities, routine leaks and emissions from common devices and equipment that use nuclear technologies such as x-rays, mammograms, CAT-scans, and full-body scans, microwave towers and cell phones.6 There have also been a fair share of intentional discharges of nuclear waste directly into the ocean by nuclear plants and nuclear powered submarines over the years.3 No doubt there are many more similar incidents that have been kept secret. According to Dr. Gabriel Cousens, “We are literally drowning in a continual sea of radiation exposure.”6 radiation poisoning

So now, in addition to the “background level” of all of this accumulated radiation, comes the fallout and pollution from Fukushima. Increased levels of radiation are already being detected in weather systems moving east since the crisis began.7 Rainwater in the San Francisco bay area that was tested during the third week of March exceeded federal standards for radiation in drinking water by 46 times.8 Thousands of tons of radioactively contaminated water are pouring directly into the ocean where elevated concentrations of radioactive cesium and iodine have been found in small fish several dozen miles south of Fukushima and high levels of radioactivity have been detected in seawater 25 miles offshore.3 This exposure far exceeds the normal, naturally occurring levels and forms of radiation present in a natural environment. As this radioactive pollution accumulates in the atmosphere, water, soil, food chain and our own tissues it presents a greater and greater threat to life itself. radiation poisoning

Radioactive Pollution in Our Environment Threatens Life Itself…

Ken Buesseler, senior scientist in marine chemistry at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts explains how this pollution can effect marine life and the food chain. “Both short-lived radioactive elements, such as iodine-131, and longer-lived elements — such as cesium-137, with a half-life of 30 years — can be absorbed by phytoplankton, zooplankton, kelp, and other marine life and then be transmitted up the food chain, to fish, marine mammals, and humans.”3 Elizabeth Grossman reports that “In the Irish Sea — where the British Nuclear Fuels plant at Sellafield in the northwestern United Kingdom released radioactive material over many decades, beginning in the 1950s — studies have found radioactive cesium and plutonium concentrating significantly in seals and porpoises that ate contaminated fish.” Also, “a die-off of seals in the Barents Sea and White Sea (where the Soviets habitually dumped waste for decades) from blood cancer, and the deaths of millions of starfish, shellfish, seals and porpoises in the White Sea — have been variously attributed by Russian scientists to pollution or nuclear contamination.”3radiation poisoning

She further explains that “Radioactive iodine is taken up by the thyroid in humans and marine mammals — or in the case of fish, thyroid tissue — and is also readily absorbed by seaweed and kelp. Cesium acts like potassium and is taken up by muscle. Cesium would tend to stay in solution and can eventually end up in marine sediment where, because of its long half life, it will persist for years. Because marine organisms use potassium they can also take up cesium. ‘Cesium behaves like potassium, so it would end up in all marine life,’ said Arjun Makhijani, president of the Institute for Energy and Environmental Research in Maryland. ‘It certainly will have an effect.’”radiation poisoning

This “effect” can continue to unfold for many generations through genetic damage and mutations, as well as contributing to immune disorders, infertility and the development of latent cancers in adults and children. At the onset of nuclear power use, the World Health Organization (WHO) was able to foresee such threats and, in 1956, issued the following warning: "Genetic heritage is the most precious property for human beings. It determines the lives of our progeny, health and harmonious development of future generations. As experts, we affirm that the health of future generations is threatened by increasing development of the atomic industry and sources of radiation."9 Of course, at the time this was just a hypothesis. Unfortunately, the hypothesis was proven by the devastating genetic mutations, immune disorders and cancers that followed the Chernobyl disaster thirty years later.4 radiation poisoning

Who are Our Protective Agencies Protecting?

So, if the WHO predicted the devastating effects of increasing the development of the atomic industry as early as the 1950s, how could we have developed such a large and widespread atomic industry over these past 5 decades? An agreement was made between the WHO and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in 1959 that permanently shifted their stance and eliminated their ability to honestly watch out for us. Helen Caldicott of The Guardian reports that “Clause 12.40 of this agreement says: ‘Whenever either organisation [the WHO or the IAEA] proposes to initiate a programme or activity on a subject in which the other organisation has or may have a substantial interest, the first party shall consult the other with a view to adjusting the matter by mutual agreement.’ In other words, the WHO grants the right of prior approval over any research it might undertake or report on to the IAEA – an advocate for the nuclear power industry. The IAEA's founding papers state: ‘The agency shall seek to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of atomic energy to peace, health and prosperity through the world.’”9radiation poisoning

This tradition of protecting the interests of private industry over the wellbeing of people and other species has been faithfully carried on by our governmental “protective” agencies. The very agencies established to protect public health and the environment have been actively hiding and distorting information regarding health risks and methods for protection in the face of this disaster. And now, after claiming that there are no significant health risks posed by this event, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is considering dramatically increasing the ‘allowable’ level of radioactive contamination in water, food and soil after radiological incidents. "This critical debate is taking place entirely behind closed doors because this plan is 'guidance' and does not require public notice as a regulation would," said Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER) Counsel member Christine Erickson.10radiation poisoning

During the coming months you will most likely hear many references to “safe” levels and “legal” limits, but many atomic experts adamantly express that there is no safe level of exposure to these radioactive substances.

“There is no safe dose of radiation since radiation is cumulative. Harm in the form of excess human cancer occurs at all doses of ionizing radiation, down to the lowest conceivable dose and dose rate.” ~ John Gofman, Ph.D., M.D. in Radiation and Human Healthradiation poisoning

“There is no safe level of exposure and there is no dose of radiation so low that the risk of malignancy is zero… the genetic risks, and especially those associated with recessive mutations, may be as harmful and debilitating to the human race as the increases of cancer.” ~ Dr. Karl Z. Morgan, director of the Health Physics Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in Sept. 1978 Bulletin of Atomic Scientists

In 1972, Dr. Abram Petkau discovered that “serious radiation damage is the result of free radical activity and its destruction of cellular structures. This free radical destructive activity may happen from small amounts of radiation exposure as a result of eating radioactive particles that have fallen on food and water. These radioactive minerals are incorporated into the body’s cellular structure. Free radical production causes radiation sickness and contributes to higher rates of cancer, as well as cross-linking among tissue proteins. These free radicals cause inflammations, damage to lung cells and blood vessels (contributing to higher rates of atherosclerosis as pointed out by world radiation expert Dr. John Gofman, MD, PhD), produce mutations, and cause degenerative diseases, including cancer. Long-term exposure to low levels of radiation is extremely dangerous, which is why there is no safe level of radiation exposure. What is called ‘safe’ is simply what the governments can get away with. It is actually at low levels of radiation exposure that free radical damage becomes more efficient according Dr. Petkau’s observation. This explains why leukemia and other cancers are occurring at 100 to 1,000 times more than initially predicted at Hiroshima.”6radiation poisoning

How Radiation Effects Our Bodies

Radiation compromises the basic structure of life by affecting cells and molecules in mutagenic ways. Depending on the level of exposure and length of time exposed the effects can range from severe burns, vomiting and imminent death to the gradual development of cancers and genetic mutations that effect several generations. Most of the health consequences resulting from the Fukushima crisis are likely to fall into the second category following relatively lower doses over longer periods of time. “This is not an imminent health concern, but we haven’t seen the end of it,” said Theo Theofanous, professor of chemical and mechanical engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara.3radiation poisoning

The Chernobyl disaster of 1986 is probably our most accurate indicator of how the radiation from the Fukushima crisis could affect our health and the environment. But, again, there are political discrepancies in the reports from this event. In 2005 the WHO issued a report attributing only 43 human deaths directly to the Chernobyl disaster and estimating an additional 4,000 fatal cancers. However, three scientists- Alexey V Yablokov, Vassily B. Nesterenko, and Alexey V Nesterenko- compiled an independent report on the effects of the radiation pollution resulting from the Chernobyl disaster; "Chernobyl: Consequences of the Catastrophe for People and the Environment", published by the New York Academy of Sciences. After synthesizing hundreds of scientific articles on the effects of the Chernobyl disaster that have appeared in Slavic language publications over the past 20 years, they estimate the number of deaths attributable to the Chernobyl meltdown at about 980,000.9radiation poisoning

In addition to this report, photojournalist Paul Fusco ventured into the region affected by the fallout from the Chernobyl explosion 20 years after it occurred to visually document the long lasting effects. He visited an orphanage that houses children with severe birth defects and disorders that resulted from exposure to radiation. The images in the Chernobyl Legacy Slideshow are deeply sobering and clearly display the outrageously devastating results of exposure to radiation, ranging from devastating cancers and deformities to inexplicable mental/emotional disorders. (viewer discretion advised) "The whole world should see those kids," said Fusco, "Because it's no good for any of us. Everything we make as human beings, nature eventually breaks."11radiation poisoning

Of the two types of radiation exposure (external and internal), it is the internal exposure to radiation that causes these serious long term health consequences. “Internal radiation emanates from radioactive elements which enter the body by inhalation, ingestion, or skin absorption. After they enter the body, these elements – called internal emitters – migrate to specific organs such as the thyroid, liver, bone, and brain, where they continuously irradiate small volumes of cells with high doses of alpha, beta and/or gamma radiation, and over many years, can induce uncontrolled cell replication – that is, cancer. Further, many of the nuclides remain radioactive in the environment for generations, and ultimately will cause increased incidences of cancer and genetic diseases over time.”9 Many of the reports of “safe” levels that we’ve seen so far are in reference to external exposure and do not take the more serious internal exposure into account.radiation poisoning

Radiation is the most vicious environmental toxin we have experienced to date. It attacks all of the systems that the more common toxins affect and compromises the body in unprecedented and horrific ways. Similar to dealing with other toxins, limiting our exposure, fortifying our bodies and detoxifying our systems are the best ways to respond to the increasing levels of radiation in our environment. The stronger and healthier you are the less susceptible you will be to radiation damage. So, once again, we come back to self care, detoxification and attention to our personal health and vitality. This is what you can do in this situation…to help yourself, your family and the world at large. Be as healthy and clear as you can be. Live clean. Eat well. Fortify your system and protect your organs with the specific nutrients outlined below. It is generally the same approach we have been working with already…but the stakes keep getting higher. There are less and less opportunities for slacking. This changing world is requiring us to stand up stronger and stronger with each passing day. radiation poisoning

Dr. Gabriel Cousens’ advice is to “be as healthy as possible.” He reports that, “Dr. Stewart’s study, titled ‘Delayed Effects of A-Bomb Radiation: A Review of Recent Mortality Rates and Risk Estimates for Five-Year Survivors’, published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health in 1982, showed that those who were the healthiest were the ones with the best survival rates. Susceptibility varies according to the quality of one’s health. The population groups that are most susceptible are those in poor health, fetuses, infants, young children, and older people.”6 radiation poisoning

Taking Action for Your Health

Now is the time to take action to support your health. Radioactive material is already traveling around the globe and being detected in rainwater, soil, crops and milk in places as far reaching as France! CRIIRAD, a French research body on radioactivity declared in their April 7th publication that the risks related to prolonged contamination among vulnerable groups of the population can no longer be considered ‘negligible’ and it is now necessary to avoid ‘risky behaviour.’ Risky behaviour was defined as consuming fresh milk or vegetables with large leaves for vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant or breastfeeding women.12 A recent milk sample taken in Hilo, Hawaii on April 4th shows extremely high levels of three separate radioactive materials totaling 20.33 times the federal drinking water limit of 3pCi/liter. It contained 24pCi/liter of cesium -134, 19 pCi/liter of cesium -137 and 18 pCi/liter of iodine -131.13 The contamination is happening now. There is no time to hesitate in taking precautions and boosting your health.radiation poisoning

As expressed above, the most effective way to protect your body from radioactive damage is to be as healthy as possible. Hopefully this is something you already have a head start on, but regardless of your level of health there are always steps to take to become healthier and stronger. Radiation will take hold in the bones, tissues and muscles and organs that are weak or compromised. Your best defense is to be strong, healthy and free from debilitating toxins. Now is the time to rise up and be healthy. Whether radiation poisoning is a serious threat or not, an increased level of vitality will surely help you face the challenges of daily life and the potentially colossal changes on the horizon.radiation poisoning

If you’re not sure what to do to support your health or need guidance in developing an effective plan, please seek help soon. Our Personal Detox Support Programs are designed to streamline and empower your personal path toward vibrant health. We also have a Guided Spring Cleanse coming up that is an excellent way to kickstart your commitment to taking care of yourself and get you pointed in the right direction. In both of these venues we will be specifically focusing on radiation protection techniques in addition to the standard detox and self care approaches we normally cover. It is time to truly make your self care a priority so you can be healthy and stay alive to help others through these changing times. radiation poisoning

Limit Exposure:

It is time to start being very careful about where your food comes from. Remember that radiation caused by internal emitters from ingested radioactive material is the most dangerous form of radiation. Avoid seaweed, fish and other marine products from the Pacific ocean (unless they were harvested before the crisis). Japanese, Hawaiian and Californian crops are most likely already highly contaminated. Mushrooms from the Pacific Northwest would also be highly contaminated. Other crops from around the world may also show elevated levels of radioactive contamination. radiation poisoning

Stay alert to this as you are choosing food over the next several months/years. You won’t be able to trust the story that the government and mainstream media present. Their interests are in maintaining the status quo- civil obedience and consumer activity. Use your own common sense and intuition and seek out reliable independent media sources.radiation poisoning

Also, eat low on the food chain. Radioactivity bio-accumulates as it moves up in the food chain. Eating a mostly plant based diet is a good precaution during this time to limit your exposure. Studies done in 1978 by the Department of Environmental Protection at the University of Hiedelberg Germany showed as a result of air exposure to radiation that cows milk was 15 times more concentrated with radioactive materials, and beef was 30 times more concentrated than leafy green vegetables.6 Conveniently, a plant-based diet will also naturally alkalize your body, which is another useful defense against radiation damage. Research published in the International Journal of Radiation in 1980, showed that if the pH of the cellular fluid was slightly more alkaline then it would protect the cells against radiation.6 radiation poisoning

Because radioactive pollution is traveling on the weather currents and is transmitted through precipitation it is also smart to stay out of the rain and snow. It is hard to say just how much exposure we would receive in different parts of the world and how cautious we need to be with this, but it is important to be aware of. Again, use your own intuition and discretion in this area. Here in the high alpine desert of Colorado where we get so little precipitation I usually rejoice in any rain or snow that comes down. I pray for it and celebrate it and LOVE to be out in it. But when it rain/snowed last week it felt different. At first I felt threatened by it and then, because I recognize the power our thoughts and feelings have on water, I prayed for its health and healing. I still didn’t go out and play in it but I did give thanks for it. This seemed to be the best I could do in the face of this uncertainty.

Fortify Your Body:

It’s also time to strengthen yourself. The need now goes beyond regular healthcare. Now, it is essential to protect your vital organs, your thyroid, your bones and your genes. Dr. Gabriel Cousens explains “the principle of selective uptake, which essentially means that if one has enough minerals in the system, the cells become saturated with healthy minerals. Once cellular mineral saturation occurs, there is less opportunity for radioactive minerals to be absorbed into the system.”6 radiation poisoning

If the radioactive particles are absorbed into your body they will emit high doses of radiation that can drastically effect the health of that area of your body. Weaker systems are much more susceptible to this type of internal attack. For example, strontium-90 fits right into your bones, emitting gamma and beta radiation and causing bone cancer. Consuming a daily brew of horsetail, nettle, oat straw and alfalfa tea (all high in silica and bone growth co-factors) nourishes the bone matrix and fortifies the bones against such attacks.14 The same is true for the thyroid, which can be fortified against iodine -131 by taking supplements of kelp, ashwaganda, nascent iodine, etc. (see below for more details)

Antioxidants are also important protectors against radiation damage. The potential of antioxidants to reduce the cellular damage induced by ionizing radiation has been studied in animal models for more than 50 years. Naturally occurring antioxidants, such as selenium and vitamin E, also may provide an extended window of protection against low-dose, low-dose-rate irradiation, including therapeutic potential when administered after irradiation.16radiation poisoning

The list of herbs and supplements suggested below has been gathered to give you tools for fortifying your organs and systems against radioactive attacks. They are generally safe (even for kids)* and excellent health support whether you are exposed to unsafe levels of radiation or not. If you are exposed to excessive radiation the vitality these supplements provide could keep you from developing serious health conditions. *for children, babies and nursing or pregnant mothers please do your own further research to determine appropriate dosage and contra-indications. radiation poisoning

Detoxify Your System:

Once exposed to radiation it is important to facilitate its release from your system. The longer the radioactive material stays in your system the more damage it can do. Dr. Cousens describes the importance of chelation. “Certain foods actively draw the radioactive materials to them and pull them out of the body via the bowel and kidney excretion process.

An important chelator for pulling radioactive material out of the system is sodium alginate. Sodium alginate reduces the amount of strontium-90 absorbed by the bone by 53-80%. Sea vegetables are high in this natural chelator. The kelp family contains the most sodium alginate. It includes kelp, arame, wakame, kombu, and hijiki. ”6 Other natural food fibers found in apples, miso, grains, beans, etc. can also be helpful chelators. radiation poisoning

But once chelated, these radioactive materials could collect in the kidneys. Therefore Dr. Counsens strongly recommends Natural Cellular Defense (NCD) to move elements out of the kidneys safely and effectively, as well as from the rest of the body. He says, “This is the most powerful chelating agent we have available to us and I strongly recommend 10 drops, 4 times daily for maintenance and up to 10 drops 6 times, daily, for acute exposure.”6 radiation poisoning

It’s time to choose life…we’re all in this together.

We each have the opportunity to choose LIFE in this moment. In the face of extreme devastation to the sanctity of life itself it is up to each of us now to choose life…in full health. Each of us is precious. Each of us is powerful. As we recognize that and support ourselves and each other in excellent health during these challenging times, we raise the vibration of this planet and all of the beautiful life forms She supports. I truly believe that choosing to move forward consciously and in good health is the absolute best thing that each of us can do.radiation poisoning

In addition to taking care of yourselves, please take care of your loved ones, as well. If you find this information to be helpful please share it with your friends and family. Once we know the truth it is our responsibility to share it with others. We can not expect the media and government to support us through this or even to tell us the truth. Unfortunately, not everyone will have access to this information and to these resources. The best we can do is to share it with those people we’re connected to. As we each do this (using this fancy internet technology) we will reach far and wide, grassroots style.

Last, but certainly not least, is that somehow we, as a species, need to stop using nuclear power and nuclear weaponry. I’m not a politically oriented person and would rather have nothing to do with that game of folly. But in the face of such widespread damage to all LIFE on the planet it seems outrageously ignorant to continue to use this technology. Personally I don’t have any idea of how to go about influencing these decisions, but if you know how to make an impact on this establishment please do so…for the sake of life.radiation poisoning

I offer this report as a humble contribution to our understanding of the impact of our choices and in deep reverence for life. I pray that the sanctity of LIFE will be protected and that humanity will find a way to live in harmony with and respect for this planet and all of the life forms She supports. Thank you for reading. radiation poisoning

Tools and Techniques for Protection against Radiation Exposure:

There are many natural foods, herbs, supplements and superfoods that can help you stay healthy in the face of increased exposure to radiation. These helpful tools will strengthen your body, protect your organs and tissues from radiation damage and help you detoxify the radiation out of your system. I’m providing a very extensive list here compiled from advice given by David Wolfe, Dr. Gabriel Cousens, Dr. Melissa Patterson, ND, Christian Bates, and Bethanne Wanamaker. Of course, you won’t be able to take all of these supplements but you can read through the list and create your own program for radiation protection based on what will work for you.radiation poisoning

Why not just take Potassium Iodide?

Potassium Iodide is only helpful for protecting your thyroid in instances of severe exposure and may have its own set of health risks. It should only be taken in small amounts for short periods of time after acute exposure to radiation. When used in this way it is highly effective in preventing radiation damage to the thyroid. However, many natural health professionals caution against taking it outside of these parameters due to its toxicity and side effects. radiation poisoning

Also, for effective protection against the myriad forms of radiation damage possible you would need a more comprehensive approach. Choose from the supplements and foods below to create a well rounded plan that protects your whole body. radiation poisoning

  • Kelp: All seaweeds are useful for decreasing the effects of radiation but Kelp, or more specifically, Kombu (aka Laminaria Japonica) is the best. It was the secret weapon of Russian doctors that saved thousands of innocent people from disease after nuclear fallout.17 Please note: Seaweeds from the Pacific Ocean harvested since the crisis began should not be used. Try to stock up on pre-disaster supplies of seaweed if they are still available.

Find Kelp online at Mountain Rose Herbs , David Wolfe’s Sunfood.com, or Live Superfoods

  • Zeolites: Natural Cellular Defense and ZeoForce are the best choices on the market. Zeolites are naturally occurring crystalline aluminosilicate minerals that are formed when lava remains in contact with fresh or salt water over millions of years. They are deeply detoxifying and alkalizing. They naturally hold a negative charge and will bond with toxins and heavy metals (like cesium) for safe and effective expulsion. Be sure to hydrate well when taking zeolites.

Find Zeolites online at David Wolfe’s Sunfood.com, or Live Superfoods

  • Nascent Iodine: Highly absorbable concentrated liquid ionic iodine in its atomic form rather than its molecular form. It is an iodine atom that has an incomplete number of electrons. It is paramagnetic, which means that the iodine atoms can hold an electromagnetic charge. This supplement is very important for protection of the thyroid and support of the detoxification process.

Find Nascent Iodine online at the Global Healing Center

  • radiation poisoning

  • Ashwagandha: Acts as an adaptogen against stress and has been shown to regrow nerves. It has been shown to limit free radical damage through its antioxidant activity. It is capable of protecting the immune system in the face of radiation. It has been used in cancer research as it suppresses the growth of cancer cells and makes them more susceptible to radiation treatment while protecting healthy cells from the effects of radiation. It is also a calming and restorative tonic for the nervous system.18

Find Ashwagandha as a dry root, powder or herbal extract at Mountain Rose Herbs

  • radiation poisoning

  • Chlorophyll: A number of studies found that chlorophyll-rich foods can decrease radiation toxicity.17 Chlorella is the best sources of chlorophyll, providing 40% more chlorophyll than wheatgrass. Other sources of chlorophyll include Vitamineral Green (by HealthForce), spirulina, sprouts, parsley, alfalfa, cereal grasses, all leafy greens and cruciferous vegetables. Chlorophyll is similar in structure to hemoglobin. Guinea pigs on a diet rich in chlorophyll showed increased resistance to lethal X-rays.17 Chlorophyll-rich vegetables are also high in magnesium which promotes circulation and detoxification of the muscular system and soft tissues, protecting them from attack from cesium -137.14

Find Chlorella and other chlorophyll rich products at Mountain Rose Herbs , David Wolfe’s Sunfood.com, or Live Superfoods. Vitamineral Green is available at Live Superfoods.

  • radiation poisoning

  • Reishi Mushrooms: Of all the medicinal mushrooms, Reishi are the most powerful protectors against ionizing radiation. They are naturally high in Beta-1,3 Glucan. In a controlled study done at the US Armed Forces Radiobiology Institute, 70% of rats given a lethal dose of radiation were completely protected from radiation effects when given a dose of yeast beta glucan by mouth after the radiation exposure. Beta glucan is a free radical scavenger. It is able to protect blood macrophages from free radical attack during and after the radiation allowing these cells to continue to function in the irradiated body and release factors important to the restoration of normal bone marrow production.17 Please note: Mushrooms grown in the fallout zones will be highly contaminated. Growing mushrooms are notorious for bio-accumulating toxins into their tissues, more so than plants, but only if the toxins are present in their growing medium (such as radioactive metals deposited on the soil).14

Find Reishi mushrooms at Mountain Rose Herbs and other products containing reishi mushrooms at David Wolfe’s Sunfood.com.
