Questions for 1 Week Detox

by Mary
(Missouri)

I just purchased and read through the 1 week detox diet plan. I have a couple of questions:

1) Do I have to eat everything as laid out on the menu or can I substitute things I like (i.e., buckwheat pancakes) for things I don't like for the same meal?

2) Is it okay to get buckwheat flour to use for the pancakes instead of making it myself? I am a SAHM to two girls ages 3 and 21 months so time is precious and I am not always able to spend as much time cooking as I would like.

3) What do I do on day 8? Do I just go back to eating the way I was? I am hoping this will cure me of my sugar dependence (and coffee too) and that I can adjust my previous eating habits to more healthy ones.

4) Can a diabetic person do this? Does it need to be modified?

Thanks!

Answer: Congrats on getting ready for your 1 Week Detox! It will be an excellent way for you to clear out and re-set your relationship with sugar and caffiene. Here are some answers to your questions - let me know if you have more...

1. You may certainly switch out meals for other meals on the menu - or you can even use an entirely different recipe from our cookbook. Anything in our cookbook or our recipes from our website is a good substitution during your detox.

2. Buckwheat flour should work fine as long as there are no strange ingredients, or wheat or sugar, added to it.

3. Your question about after the detox is a great one! You will likely want to incorporate at least several new habits and foods into your
regular lifestyle so you probably won't go back completely to your old way of eating. You may choose to cut out coffee more permanently or substitute alternative sweeteners for refined sugar on a regular basis. Make sure you sign up for our daily email support so that you receive more guidelines for easing off of your detox gently. It's important not to shock your system by going off too quickly and we give you guidelines for how to do it safely.

4. This is a GREAT plan for diabetics - there is no need to change anything on the plan. We've had several diabetics on our group detox following these same guidelines with excellent results.

Congrats again - you will be so glad that you did this and your girls too will enjoy these recipes and learn to use some new foods. It's great for the whole family! Let us know how it goes!

Healthy Blessings, Cindy

All of this sounds great, thx! One more question....can I use honey in my detox tea or another sweetener other than sugar? Am I allowed to drink green tea during the detox? I can probably survive w/o coffee if i switch
to something else w/caffeine or is that not allowed?

I am going to try to start this next monday so I would like to decaf myself as much as possible this week in preparation. Also, I am pleased that we are already living a no artificial food coloring, no artificial sweeteners, no artificial anything diet already! So avoiding those things won't be a change for us

You can sweeten with raw honey or other healthy sweetener, but taste it first. The licorice makes it taste sweet and most people really like the taste as is. There is nothing that is "not allowed" because everyone is different and this is about YOU and what works best for you. Read our page on "coffee substitute" and you may want to try the raw cacao drink that my husband used to get off of coffee.

Green tea is an option if it works for you - personally I get nauseous and jittery from green tea but I do well with raw cacoa (it has a stimulant theobromin, but not caffeine). Maca powder is another good natural stimulant that will help with energy and lessen fatigue. Skullcap is a good herb to use if you get headaches from caffiene withdrawal.

I think easing off of coffee this week is a great idea before beginning your whole body detox. You are on the right track! Use your detox journal from the free start up kit and track how you do, listen to your own body and adjust your program as needed.
