Natural Coloring for Salt Scrub
by Marlene
Hi!
I want to make a natural body salt scrub...and was wondering what I could use as a natural color for the scrub? I do not want to use food coloring, mica, or mineral pigments...just something that will give a light color to the salt. What would be the shelf life of a salt scrub...without being refrigerated? Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated. I thank you in advance.
Sincerely,
Marlene
Answer: Hi Marlene, I'm glad you're thinking about natural ways to color your salt scrub. There are a few options that we can suggest for you. The most simple and best solution we can think of is to use the naturally pink
Himalayan Salt available through Mountain Rose Herbs. This salt has a lovely pink color that will make your salt scrub beautiful.
If you want to get more involved you could experiment with some of the natural colorings we would use to color food.
Beet powder will make different hues of pink and red,
turmeric will make a golden yellow color and
spirulina powder will color it green. We haven't experimented with using these natural colors in salt scrubs so we can't assure the results. But these colorings all work well in food and would have beneficial effects on skin health.
The shelf life of your salt scrub will depend on the oils you use and whether you add in Vitamin E oil as a preservative. If you use less stable oils such as Almond oil without the Vitamin E oil you can expect your salt scrub to begin smelling rancid after about 6 months. Coconut oil is a great stable oil to mix into your salt scrub to help it last longer.
Vitamin E oil will add extra benefit to your skin as well as extend the life of your salt scrub.
