Liquids on the Cleanse

by Wilderness
(Cape Cod)

When you say not to eat anything for awhile before or after a green smoothie, does that include the detox tea? I got up and drank 12 oz of water, then had the smoothie, and here it is 10 am and I am just getting to the tea. I think it will be difficult to drink all the water, tea, and smoothie you recommend--not because I don't like it, but because I'm not sure there is enough time in the day. Can you talk more about this?

Answer: It is a lot of liquid, isn’t it!?!

Flushing your system with cleansing and nourishing liquids is a very important part of a successful detox. Ideally you want to feel like a clear channel. The more fluids you move through your body the better you’ll feel. The idea is to flush out the toxins stirred up through your detox process quickly so they don’t float around in your blood and make you feel crummy. It’s ALL about flow…

And, yes, you can drink your detox tea and green smoothie around the same time. The reason we recommend not eating anything else with (or right after) your smoothie is to keep your digestion healthy. The simple blended foods in your smoothie will digest quickly and efficiently if taken without other foods. When combined with more complicated foods like grains or eggs Green Smoothies can sometimes cause gas and bloating due to incomplete digestion. The detox tea shouldn’t cause these digestive disturbances.

As a reference point for how much water most people require for proper hydration you can calculate half your weight and drink that many ounces each day. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds you would want your daily water intake to be about 75 oz. During a detox you would ideally drink even more. But this is a learning process and we are each different. Use this information as a guide and reference point and then do what you can. Follow this link for more information on healthy hydration.

Drinking this volume of liquids is a lot to get used to but it is possible and it will make you feel excellent! Take your time with it, do your best and just remind yourself that you are creating a clear open channel. Visualize your body as a riverbed and the fluids you’re drinking as the fresh clean running water of a wild mountain river.
