How long can I drink the Detox Tea?

by Alisha

I know that the detox tea says you shouldn't drink it for more than 2 weeks. How long of a break do you need before you can drink it daily again?

I really like the tea and want to drink it regularly but not sure how long a break one needs from it.

Answer: The reason that we advise to use the tea for only two weeks at a time is because of the potency of the liver/kidney detoxifying herbs in the mix; specifically burdock root, dandelion root and milk thistle. Some herbs are best used for short term therapeutic applications and other herbs (called tonic herbs) work well on an ongoing basis to support general health and vitality. It's unlikely that you would experience or notice any serious effects from using this tea mixture for longer than two weeks, but it's just not the most effective or safest way to use these herbs.

We recommend modifying the detox tea recipe to our Spiced Chai recipe for the times when you are not specifically focusing on a detox. The herbs used in a chai recipe will keep your digestion stimulated and help you to continuing detoxing without using the more specific liver/kidney cleansing herbs.

Another option is to use some of the more nourishing tonic herbs to help you stay balanced and vital (especially during the winter). Nettles are a wonderful tonic strengthener for your kidneys. Oatstraw is calming nourishing and high in calcium. Red Raspberry leaf is a great tonic herb for women as it supports our reproductive health. Those are a few good ones to start with.

When making tea from the leaves and finer parts of the plant, bring the water to a boil and then remove it from the heat before adding herbs. Cover and let steep for 20 minutes instead of boiling it.

Personally, I(Jo) like to drink a combination of ginger and nettles. I simmer the fresh ginger root for about 20 minutes. Then I turn it off and add the nettles to steep for another 20 minutes or so. This mixture is just right for me in between focused detox periods.

These herbs are all available through Mountain Rose Herbs. This is the best source we've found for high quality organic herbs. Visit our Store to link through to their site and buy your nourishing herbs.
