Healthy Snack Ideas

Trail Mix

Pick and choose from these healthy snack ideas and have them on hand during your detox. Depending on your metabolism and your level of detoxing you may or may not need to snack. But you’ll want to have cleansing snacks available when and if you have cravings between meals so that you don’t reach for something outside of your detox plan.

The best things to consume between meals are pure water and herbal detox tea. Drinking lots of water and tea in between meals will flush the toxins out of your system.

If you feel hungry try drinking a large glass of water or tea before reaching for a snack. Often that will be enough. Feelings of hunger often indicate mild dehydration and are relieved when you hydrate. Wait 5 -10 minutes. If you still feel hungry, then reach for a cleansing snack.

Cleansing snacks can include fresh raw veggies, fresh raw fruit, dried fruit, raw nuts, or any of the specialty detox snacks listed below.

Fresh Fruit Healthy Snack Ideas

Fresh fruits include pears, apples, bananas, oranges, grapefruits, berries, cherries, peaches, plums, apricots, pomegranate seeds, melons, pineapple, mangos, kiwis, and all the other exotic, fresh and sweet fruit treasures.

Fresh fruit is nature’s perfect snack. It’s loaded with nutrients, vitamins, minerals and tons of antioxidants. The natural sugars in fresh fruit are the perfect thing to give you a little boost of energy when you need it. And they come in their own little packages, making them about the easiest and most convenient snack to carry.

Eat sweet fruits moderately, especially if you suffer from Candidiasis or sugar addiction. Even the natural sugars can raise your blood sugar and feed the Candida when eaten in excess. Fruit can also cause bloating and indigestion when overeaten or combined with most other foods.

Fresh fruit is delicious on its own and for digestion it’s best not to mix it with most other foods. But if you want a little extra something with your fruit, nuts and nut butters are a good choice. Here are some of our favorite fruit combinations for healthy snack ideas:

  • Apple slices with cinnamon and almond butter
  • Pear or apple slices dipped in Lemon Tahini Dressing
  • Cherries with raw cashews
  • Banana with almond butter

Dried Fruit Healthy Snack Ideas

Dried fruits that are healthy snacks include mangos, apple slices, raisins, dates, apricots, figs, and any other dried fruit that does not have added sugar or preservatives.

Dried fruit is another convenient, delicious and nourishing snack option. Make sure to choose unsweetened and untreated dried fruits. Dried papaya, pineapple and cranberries are hard to find without the sugar. Some dried fruits, like apricots, are treated with sulfur in order to retain their color. Choose the dark brown dried apricots instead of the bright orange ones to avoid the sulfur.

Enjoy dried fruit on its own and/or try some of our favorite combinations:

  • Dried cherries and raw cashews
  • Dates stuffed with crunchy raw or soaked (more nutritious) almonds (take out each pit and replace with an almond)
  • Raw trail mix- combine your choice of raw nuts with sunflower or pumpkin seeds and dried fruit of your choice. Add a few raw cacoa nibs for a chocolate version
  • Raisins, raw walnuts and a pinch of sea salt

Fresh Vegetable Healthy Snack Ideas

Every thing from bell peppers, tomatoes, celery, cucumbers, carrots, greens, avocados, to more exotic like daikon radishes, jicama, or snap peas, make great healthy snack ideas.

Enjoy the bounty of nature just as it is. Fresh vegetables are low in calories and high in nutrients, making them perfect detox snacks. They are also naturally full of water which means they’re hydrating to your body and have a satisfying crunchiness.

These fresh vegetables make great snacks just the way they are, sprinkled with sea salt or dulse flakes, or dipped in one of our detox dips or spreads. Munch on them unadorned and/or try some of these ideas:

  • Hummus and raw veggies - you can make your own or buy a natural hummus.
  • Super Pesto and raw veggies
  • Lemon Tahini Dressing and raw veggies
  • Guacamole and raw veggies
  • Ants on a log - celery with almond butter or tahini and raisins
  • Tomato slices and fresh basil and a drizzle of olive oil
  • Cucumber slices with lime juice and sea salt
  • Avocado with dulse flakes or Fresh Salsa
  • Seaweed wraps - crisp veggies wrapped in a sheet of nori

Other Healthy Snack Ideas

  • Homemade Granola Bars
  • Homemade Energy Bars
  • LaraBars. If you can't make your own from above, these are raw fruit and nut bars that you can buy at nearly every grocery store in the states.
  • Homemade Nut Cookies
  • Kale chips
  • Dulse chips. Lightly toasting dulse seaweed leaves turns them into crispy chips. Their natural saltiness and great crispy texture can really satisfy your chip cravings.
  • Rice crackers or flax crackers with almond butter, tahini or one of our dips or spreads. You can make your own raw flax crackers or look for the brand “Mary’s Gone Crackers” at the store.
  • Dolmas (stuffed grape leaves). You can buy these in a can at most health food stores. They make an amazingly convenient and filling quick snack or lunch when you’re in a rush.
  • Rice cake with almond butter and rice syrup. This treat goes a long way to satisfy a sweets craving. If you want cookies and don’t have time to make one of our healthy recipes, this is for you.
  • Soaked almonds. Soak raw almonds overnight (or for 8-10 hours). Then drain and eat. This is the healthiest way to eat almonds. Soaking them activates their live enzymes, makes them more digestible and increases their ability to alkalize your body. Soaked almonds will keep for 3-4 days in the fridge. If you want them crunchy again, put them in a dehydrator or dry in the sun.
  • Applesauce. Can’t get more simple than unsweetened applesauce.
  • Sprouted toast and almond butter
  • Tamari roasted almonds. A less healthy, but totally delicious and satisfying version of the almond. They’re available at most health food stores in the bulk section.
