Green Smoothie Questions

by Marilyn
(Cape Cod)

For the green smoothie is it good for digestion to combine fruits and vegetables? Do you peel any of the fruit before adding (orange, lemon)? Does all of this food fit in a normal size blender? How much do you recommend drinking (of the 1 quart) per meal?

Answer: Thanks for these green smoothie questions. I'm glad to see you are getting ready for the green smoothie adventure!

First, the simple answers...Yes, each of these recipes should fit comfortably in a normal sized blender. You can either juice the lemons and oranges or peel them and chop them before putting them in.

Each of the recipes we have shared on the Green Smoothies page are intended to serve one person. Our suggestion is to drink your green smoothie for the first meal of the day, without any other foods. A good serving size for beginners may be between one pint and one quart. This size should provide a great amount of nourishment and leave you feeling satisfied.

It is a common belief that fruit should not be combined with any other foods for proper digestion. For the most part this is very true. The exception to this rule is raw greens. Raw greens contain such a high level of enzymes and are so simple to digest (especially when blended) that they actually combine quite well with fruit.

We do, however, recommend drinking your green smoothie on an empty stomach and without any other foods. Combining your green smoothie with other foods may cause gas, bloating and incomplete digestion.

Most people we've worked with tend to do just fine with these guidelines. But, as always, every body is different. Be sure to listen to your own body and adjust according to what works best for you.
