Rise and Shine Fresh Fruit Salad

fruit saladFruit salad for breakfast is a great way to kick start a day of cleansing. Fruits are easy to digest, provide quick energy and hydrate your body.

A morning of fresh fruit will help clear out your digestive tract and energize you for the day. Fruit is an abundant source of the vitamins, minerals, fiber and enzymes that your body needs.

Fresh is Best

There is no substitute for fresh fruit. Fruit juices and canned fruit are missing many of the vital nutrients of fresh fruit and often include sugar and preservatives. Most juices and canned fruit are pasteurized. This means they are heated to a high temperature to kill bacteria. This heating process also destroys the fruit’s natural enzymes and much of its nutritional content.

Combining fresh fruits into a healthy fruit salad is a special treat for your eyes and your taste buds. Make your fruit salads beautiful and vary the fruits you use by the season. Have fun trying new fruits and different combinations. For an adventurous seasonal shopper, fruit choices are nearly endless!

Go Organic!

Choosing organic fruit is important for your detox, your health and the environment, but with some fruits it’s more important than with others. These are particularly important to eat organic. When tested these fruits consistently show high pesticide loads. Other fruits carry relatively lower levels of pesticides. We encourage you to buy organic as often as possible, but because organic fruit isn’t always available or affordable it’s helpful to know which conventional fruits are relatively safer:
  • Highest Pesticide Loads: Apples • peaches • nectarines • pears • grapes • cherries • all berries (especially strawberries)
  • Lower Pesticide Loads: Pineapple • mango • kiwi • melons • bananas • citrus fruits

Fruit Sugar - The Right Balance

Fruits contain natural sugar (fructose) that can affect your blood sugar, acidity and yeast growth. When eaten as part of a whole fresh fruit this natural sugar can be a great source of energy for your cells. But, even though these sugars are very mild compared to refined sugar, they may still aggravate issues in some people.

High sugar fruits can raise your blood sugar, acidity and aggravate Candidiasis (yeast overgrowth), especially if they’re overeaten. Yeast thrives on any form of sugar (although refined white sugar is its favorite) and will multiply rapidly when well supplied. Population explosions in the yeast will cause an increase in symptoms and cravings for more sweets.

Eat fruits during your most active part of the day so you can make use of the quick burning sugar they provide. Combine high sugar fruits with low and moderate sugar fruits when making your fruit salads. And make sure you don’t overeat high sugar fruits if you have blood sugar issues or Candidiasis.

  • High Sugar Fruits: melons, grapes, bananas, kiwi, pineapple, mango and any dried fruits.
  • Moderate Sugar Fruits: apples, oranges, peaches, pears, plums, and pomegranates.
  • Low Sugar Fruits: grapefruit, green apples, cherries, and most berries.

How to Eat a Fruit Salad!

It’s best to eat fruit on an empty stomach. Fruit digests very quickly on its own but when combined with other types of food it can get slowed down in your digestive tract. When this happens it can begin to ferment and cause gas and/or bloating. If you experience gas and bloating when mixing your fruits with other foods, try eating fruits as a meal all by themselves.

(The exceptions to this food combining rule are raw greens and raw nuts.)

Ingredients:

(use organic whenever possible)

Use any or all of the following fresh fruits: apples • oranges • bananas • peaches • nectarines • strawberries • blueberries • pineapple • kiwi • grapefruit • raspberries • plum • melons • mango • starfruit • papaya • tangerine • cherries • grapes • pomegranate • pears • plums • apricot

Use the following dried fruits sparingly (unsweetened only): raisins • figs • dates • coconut

Top with your choice: cinnamon • cardamom • vanilla extract • lemon juice • mint leaves • nuts

Directions:

  1. Peel, chop and slice your fruits into bite-size pieces and place in a bowl. Leave peels on for the fruits you can. Often the best nutrients are in the peel.
  2. Mix well and top with a delicious garnish from the list above.
  3. Eat fresh and enjoy!

  • Add raw nuts and seeds sparingly to your fruit salad for protein.
  • For superfood power and increased nutritional and cleansing properties, sprinkle a little goji or acai berries, spirulina, maca powder, flax meal or raw cacao on top.
