Fruit salad for breakfast

by LIsa
(Miami Fl)

I have been on a "body maintenance" program combining diet and exercise... I eat a fresh fruit salad for breakfast usually about 3 to 4 times a week and on alternate days I have fresh fruit w/ activia low fat or regular activia yogurt...I live in Miami FL and am able to get any type of fruit...one of my co workers commented on my fruit salad that it was high in sugar content and does not promote weight loss .. I said nonsense!!! Is this true ??

Answer:
Hi Lisa,

This is a great question and a great example of how all the conflicting health information currently available can be confusing and distracting.

The most important aspect of creating health for yourself and maintaining a healthy body weight is developing a good relationship with your body. As you learn how to pay close attention to what works for your body new or conflicting information from the media or coworkers will be less relevant for you.

So, I guess our question back to you would be...Is fruit in the morning working for you? Are you successfully maintaining a healthy weight? Are you satisfied after your breakfast and experience consistent energy throughout the morning?

These are important questions to ask yourself and consider.

From our perspective, natural fresh fruit can make a great healthy breakfast for some people. Some people may need some protein and/or whole grains to provide more consistent energy throughout the morning and avoid the blood sugar ups and downs.

What your co-worker was most likely referring to is the rise in blood sugar that can happen after eating just fruit. While your blood sugar is elevated you are unable to loose weight. But the natural sugars and fiber in fruit provides only a gentle rise in blood sugar for most people. If incorporated into a healthy natural diet (free from refined sugar and processed foods) fresh fruit in the morning should pose no issues.

Also, staying with natural foods as much as possible is a key factor in general health, weight loss and weight maintenance. An important, and often overlooked, phenomenon is that when you eat artificial and/or denatured foods your body responds by stashing these new toxins in fat cells.

Both the regular and light versions of Activia yogurt contain unnatural ingredients including sugar, modified food starch, fructose, aspartame, acesulfame, etc. If you want yogurt with your fruit we recommend choosing an all natural organic plain yogurt made from just organic milk and bacterial cultures. If you need to sweeten it a little for flavor you can add a little natural honey or maple syrup.

We realize that this goes against convention and marketing a bit, but it is a significant factor in health, weight loss and weight management.

Another great breakfast option for weight loss and management are Green Smoothies. They're a delicious and nutritious way of getting lots of fruit, greens and superfoods in in the morning. Try out our Green Smoothie Recipes to add a great new weight maintenance trick to your morning routine.

Thank you NEW
by: Lisa

Thank you for your explanation in regards to my question...,And to answer your question to me Yes the fresh fruit salad for breakfast is working for me... i also agree with you in regards to the Activa yogurt and actually the only reason for incorporating those into my diet was for the benefit of being able to digest yogurt due to me being Lactose intolerable, and it appeared that Activa was the only yogurt that I could properly digest.. Although I did seem to do well with Greek yogurt but not sure if it is good for me like an organic yogurt like you suggested...I will try an Organic yogurt to see if I can tolerate it... I hope so seeing that it would be more beneficial to me...I really look forwad to also incorporating the Green Smoothies into my diet...
