Problems with Fad Diets and Extreme Detoxing

Fad diets and extreme detoxing may be too much of a leap from your normal daily diet. Detoxing too quickly may be harmful, fail to detoxify your system and potentially re-toxify your body. This could leave you feeling weak, deprived, and ready to binge on anything you can get your hands on.

Detox in the Media

The media is flooded with popular detox diets that require extreme caloric restriction or near total fasting. Celebrities are making headlines following these fad diets for detox. While these diets may be beneficial for some who are ultra fit, have been cleansing for years, or follow professional guidance, they are not safe for everyone.

Many people, including us, have seen incredible benefits from the Master Cleanse, the Fruit Flush, Juice Feasting, or a 100% Raw Food diet. These are very effective, healing diets for the right person at the right time. But if the preparation and planning they require is overlooked, they may contribute to serious health problems.

Risks of Extreme Detoxing

Most prescribed detox diets require that you fast from solid foods. Without proper long term preparation this approach can be hard to handle physically and mentally. Fasting alone can easily cause severe fatigue, dizziness and headaches as well as setting you up for a big backlash binge at the end of your cleanse.

In addition to fasting, many of these fad diets require the use of powerful detox aids and laxatives that can lead to organ damage, vitamin deficiencies, blood sugar problems, dehydration and the loss of healthy bacteria.

But the primary risk of extreme detoxing is autointoxication. This is when stored toxins are released into the bloodstream faster than your body can eliminate them. These toxins (now more hazardous than they were in their original form) get backed up in your digestive system and are reabsorbed through your intestinal lining. They reenter the bloodstream and cause severe detox symptoms as well as re-toxify your system.

Gentle Balance

The key to a successful detox is to strike the delicate balance between the toxins you stir up and your ability to eliminate them. A customized gentle detox diet will nourish your body with cleansing foods while safely and gradually escorting the toxins out of your body. This type of detoxing has so many health benefits and feels so good that you’ll feel like you’ve been given a new lease on life.

**Extreme detoxing can also be dangerous for people with certain medical conditions and for pregnant and nursing mothers. Please read this warning on who should NOT detox.
