Healing Waters of a Detox Bath

A detox bath is one of the easiest, most deeply nourishing detox therapies that you can do at home. Simple, pure water is a magic elixir and a powerful healer.

Sometimes all it takes is a hot bath to cleanse your body, mind and soul after a tough day, while battling an illness, or at the onset of detox symptoms.

Your skin is your largest detoxification organ, often referred to as a “third kidney.” You can draw toxins out through your skin, via sweating, dry skin brushing, or detoxifying baths. The use of healing waters is an ancient remedy used by many cultures around the world.

“If there is magic on this earth, it is in water.” ~Loren Eisley

How to Create a Detox Bath

If you can access mineral hot springs, that is fantastic for supporting your detox. But to create almost the same effect at home, simply add Epsom salts to your hot bath water. Epsom salts are the most powerful salt for drawing toxins out through your pores – add 1- 3 cups to a standard size bath.

It is best to use pure filtered water for your bath, but if you don’t have a filter on your bath water, add 1 cup of baking soda to help neutralize chlorine, soften the water and increase mineral absorption into the skin.

The Epsom salts (magnesium sulfate) not only draw toxins out but provide minerals that enrich and nourish your skin as they are absorbed. To add more nutrients, blend your Epsom salts with Dead Sea salt, sea salt, Himalayan salt or any of the other salts listed on our recipe page for homemade bath salts. These homemade blends are excellent for your detox bath, but just the Epsom salt and hot water is enough to create a very cleansing effect.

Soak for at least 20 minutes in the hottest water you can handle – 40 minutes is even more optimal. Either shower off or leave the salts (and oils if using a blend) on your body overnight to continue absorbing the nutrients through your skin.

Don’t apply body lotions, but you may want to rub a natural emollient like pure almond, sesame, jojoba or coconut oil into your skin. These oils have many healing properties of their own right and will nourish and heal not only your skin but your organs as they absorb into your body.

Ginger Bath for an Intense Sweat

To really intensify your detox and induce a profuse sweating, add up to 1/2 cup of freshly grated ginger or up to 1 tablespoon of ginger powder to your hot detox bath. The ginger will create heat in your body causing sweat to pour out.

It is a great remedy for colds and flus, to sweat out the illness-inducing bugs. Be prepared for an intense sweat that will continue even after you leave the bath! If you are fighting a bug, you might also wrap your body in a warm blanket or towels afterwards to continue the sweating for even longer.

You may even want to wrap up and crawl right into bed and fall asleep, allowing your body to sweat and absorb the nutrients for hours. You will likely wake up feeling refreshed and energized.

Additional Tips

  • Make sure to re-hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water before, during and after your bath.
  • Use your dry skin brush before bathing to clear dead skin cells and prepare your body for maximizing the benefits of the bath. For a great selection of bath brushes visit From Nature With Love. For brushes, salts and other detox tools all at one stop, visit our Whole Body Detox Diet Store.
  • When getting out of your bath move slowly and carefully as you may feel lightheaded or weak from the sweating and detox work your body has accomplished.
  • Do not eat immediately before or after your detox bath.
  • Allow time after your bath to rest and rejuvenate, letting your body heal.
