Brown Rice - Go Whole Grain!

brown riceUnrefined brown rice is an important part of a gentle detox and a healthy long term diet. This form of rice is the WHOLE grain; the germ, bran and starch along with all their vital nutrients. When rice is milled into white rice, the bran and germ are removed leaving only the starch behind.

White rice and its products have very little nutritional value. White rice also has a high glycemic index, meaning that it causes blood sugar to rise rapidly promoting the development of blood sugar disorders, diabetes, and weight gain.

In addition to all this, white rice is constipating. This is the type of thing that happens when we humans try to “improve” a perfectly good whole food by refining it. The hidden magic and value of that food is lost and many unpleasant side effects are often created.

Brown Rice is a Whole Food

Whole foods are exceptionally nourishing for your body because of the synergy of their components. Scientists can isolate certain chemical compounds and substances within a food and can even reproduce many of these isolated chemicals in labs. But these isolated chemicals don’t produce the same protective or nutrient benefit of the whole foods they come from.

There is no replacement for whole foods just the way nature provides. They are the foods we have evolved to thrive on. Unrefined brown rice is the perfect example of the value of whole foods.

What's Missing When Refined?

Brown rice is high in dietary fiber, vitamins, minerals, essential oils and protective antioxidants. Rice bran lowers high blood sugar and has been found to be one of the most nutrient dense substances ever studied. It contains over 70 antioxidants, protects against cellular damage, and preserves youthfulness.

Rare forms of vitamin E that lower excess of fat and cholesterol have also been discovered in rice bran. It is also calming to the nervous system due to an abundance of B vitamins and trace minerals.

Gamma-oryzanol is a rare and powerful antioxidant found only in rice bran. It strengthens muscles and converts fat into lean body mass. The antioxidant Alpha Lipoic Acid in brown rice promotes liver restoration, slows the aging process and converts glucose to energy.

Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) is an enzyme antioxidant in rice that reduces mucous excesses, boosts respiratory function and helps detoxify the body. The CoQ10 it contains burns fat into energy helping you lose weight and protecting your heart. Unrefined rice also contains proanthocyanidins that are additionally protective against poisons and toxins in the blood, lymph and organ systems.

This is just a small sampling of the nutrients in brown rice. We’ve chosen to highlight those aspects of this amazing whole grain that will be especially supportive to your detox.

How to Cook Brown Rice

This is the best way to cook whole grain rice. It will turn out tender and delicious. It will also be easiest for you to digest and receive all its valuable nutrients.

  1. Measure out a specific amount of rice (2 cups will make a nice big batch for the week).
  2. Rinse thoroughly and drain.
  3. Cover with clean water and a dash of apple cider vinegar.
  4. Soak overnight.
  5. Drain and rinse thoroughly again.
  6. Place in sauce pan with twice as much water as the dry rice you started with (2 cups of grain = 4 cups water) and put the cover on.
  7. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low and let cook for about 30 minutes until the water is gone.
If you don't have time to soak over night:
  1. Measure out a specific amount of rice.
  2. Rinse thoroughly and drain. Very Important! Don't skip this.
  3. Place in sauce pan over medium heat with three times the amount of water as rice. (2 cups dry rice = 6 cups water).
  4. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium low. Let cook covered for about 45 minutes or until water is gone.
