Are these foods OK for detox?

by Kate
(Cape Cod, MA)

Hi,

I am doing the body cleanse for the first time this week. My husband is more or less going along with it too which is a huge support. I have a question about a few foods that I would like to know your opinion about. I know the emphasis is on whole foods but can you explain your take on tofu during the cleanse? Is it too processed and will it distract from the body's aim to clean and balance this week? Also, I noticed brown rice is given the thumb's up. Does that mean I can assume a batch of wild rice would be encouraged also? (we have a dish of leftover baked tofu and wild rice from last night that I wasn't sure what to do with).

Thanks so much and I really appreciate all of your resources and emails!

Answer:
Hi Kate,

We're so glad you're joining us on the Guided Spring Cleanse! You're right...the emphasis for this cleanse is on whole foods. Your body will detox best when it's given truly natural foods that have not been refined, denatured or processed.

Tofu is a processed food and would not be generally recommended as a detox food.

But your cleanse is YOUR cleanse. Just as we discussed on the first teleseminar, it's important to create your own guidelines that suit your diet and lifestyle. Assess whether tofu is one of the heaviest most processed foods you eat or not. Then decide if you think tofu should be on your detox menu. For more specific information about soy products and our general take on them in regards to detox you can read the answer we posted to one of the questions from our last Guided Cleanse.

And wild rice is fine. No questions or problems with that one- as long as it doesn't have some strange additives or flavorings.

So, this one is up to you. Maybe having those leftovers for dinner tonight would be the perfect way to ease into your cleanse. Remember, this is about self care and self nurturing. Try not to be too hard on yourself. Eating the left overs tonight might give you time to prepare some healthy food for tomorrow or get more clear on your menu plan for the week.

We hope you have a wonderful cleanse experience!
