| Hello Happy high summer to you! We hope you’ve been enjoying the pleasures and freedom of summer, basking in the sun, celebrating with friends and eating lots of fresh produce! This is such a great time of year for enjoying the abundance of nature. We are back from a month of summer vacations and getting into the healthy groove again. In this issue we share about our adventures on the road and tips for how to have a healthy rebound from summer vacationing. Rebounding from our Summer "Retox" This summer we took the month of July off to travel with our families. We each set out on our separate road trips to travel across the country and enjoy some summertime fun with friends and family on the East coast.
Leaving the high alpine desert of the Rocky Mountains behind and heading towards the ocean beaches and lush green forests of the East coast meant stepping out of our normal lives and routines. Traveling is a great opportunity to go with the flow and experience life in different ways. These summer road trips were all about having fun, seeing new things and connecting with the people we love around the country. It felt great to be able to dip in and out of different towns and cities and different peoples’ homes to experience life from their perspectives. Dabbling with Some Summer Retox So along with the departure from our normal surroundings, we also let go of some of our normal eating and lifestyle habits. Summer vacation with friends and family felt like the perfect time for the occasional glass of wine, an ice cream cone on the beach, lobster and oysters soaked in melted butter, or piles of shrimp and hush puppies at a Southern “shrimparoo” (yum). Out of necessity and convenience (and sometimes just for fun) we made lots of exceptions about the types or quality of foods we ate.
Years ago, when we were still cleansing from the major toxic overload of a conventional diet we were so easily triggered into relapse. Slight detours off the healthy path would instigate major toxic reactions and set unhealthy habits into motion again. Now good health is the norm and our bodies are strong enough to handle a few detours here and there. A healthy body can process moderate amounts of new toxins because it’s not bogged down and overloaded by years of unhealthy eating. Also, our healthy habits are so solidly in place now that even when we’re away from home it’s second nature to drink tons of water and eat loads of greens. We crave healthy food and seek it out. We also enjoy exercising, getting out in nature and just being gentle with ourselves. That’s such a saving grace! Detoxing the Retox That said and appreciated, after eating vacation foods for a whole month we were definitely feeling it and ready for a little cleaning up. Getting back home to the clean mountain air and our kitchens stocked with cleansing fresh foods, herbs and superfoods was super exciting. There’s nothing like going away to help grow your appreciation for what you have at home. Getting to prepare food in our own kitchens again and eat the fresh local foods of the late summer has been delightful! As we prepare meals we’ve been marveling at how packed with nutrients they are. The chia porridge Jo makes each morning, dressed up with fresh fruits and superfoods, has more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants than all the breakfasts she ate in the month of July combined! Cindy is relishing in rich green smoothies, huge garden salads and loads of lightly steamed kale from the garden. Our bodies are jumping for joy! The minor symptoms of heaviness that the month of travel set in are quickly fading as we sink back into our healthy rhythms.
