Making 2010 a Healthy, Happy New Year It is the beginning of a whole new year and even a whole new decade. Now that the holidays are over and we’re left with the relative quiet of winter we’re given a great opportunity to create the kind of year we want. This time of year is perfect for personal reflection, re-prioritizing and starting fresh.
For most people in our culture this is the quietest time of year and the time of year with the most regularity. The erratic schedules and extra indulgences of summers and holidays make it more difficult to make healthy choices. If you seize this precious moment at the beginning of the year to establish healthy habits they will support a healthy, happy year and be firmly in place for when life gets busy. So what are your New Year’s resolutions? This time honored tradition can actually be a very powerful tool when used well. Your mind is much more powerful than you think. When you take the time to truly consider what you value and what you would like to bring forth into your life this year, you set yourself up for big changes. Think about the past year- the successes and joys, the struggles and challenges. Think about how much life you lived in 2009. Then think about the coming year and the changes you would like to see occur. What do you need more of? What do you need less of? What are you ready to let go of? What are you ready to learn? It’s up to you where you put your precious attention and how you spend your energy in this coming year. Remember to consider your dreams and plans for 2010 in a holistic way. That means think about the whole story. And remember that your health is the foundation of your life. If you would like to go back to school this year or have a child you’re going to need your health. If you want to travel and enjoy time with your friends you’ll need to be healthy. If you intend to pay off your debt or move to another town your health will be crucial. When you are sick or in pain it’s nearly impossible to focus on anything else. This is how so many of us get stuck in the same old rut year after year. Make this year different right from the start by prioritizing your health so you can go after your dreams and plans. Consider how you can bring deeper strength and vitality to your body. How do you want to feel in your body? How do you want to relate to your food? How do you want to exercise? These things are up to you. It’s your choice to continue old habits or start new ones. A good cleanse will lighten your load and free you of old, unhealthy habits. "I don’t really advocate 100% raw food diet for most people because it’s just irrational from where we are coming from… we are literally survivors of a dietary holocaust. I’m talking about Pez, I’m talking about Cheetos, fast food, Nerds candy – I mean we have eaten stuff that is so toxic that it is literally almost radioactive… Coming from that perspective, we have got to be gentle on ourselves." Spend your money on your health... "First of all, I have to dispel the whole “expensive myth”. Because here’s what’s expensive - your rent, your mortgage, your car payment…your health is where you need to put your money. We have this phrase in our language which is, “Put your money where your mouth is.” What a powerful phrase!
