Wondering Which Detox Tools and Therapies to Use? How do You Know When You Need Them?

Detoxing your body isn’t just about what you avoid. It’s also about what you add. Natural tools and resources nourish your body and increase its vitality. Along with drinking lots of pure water and eating nourishing, cleansing foods, we recommend using supportive tools and therapies.

We know, through personal experience, that when you change your diet, everything changes. We’ve also learned, through trial and error, that getting adequate support for these changes makes all the difference!

Once upon a time I (Cindy) decided to become “raw” and eat a diet of 100% raw plant foods including vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts. I understood the raw diet is not for everyone, but I love health and this is often touted as the ultimate cleansing diet for health and healing. I had to try it. What happened to my body over 3 months of a raw food diet was a whole lot of cleansing, a whole lot of new healthy habits, and a whole lot of healing!

Over my summer of raw, I encountered a “healing crisis” every few weeks or so. Each healing crisis would happen when the toxins my body was stirring up got ahead of my ability to eliminate them. I got overloaded! Detox symptoms like bloating, fatigue, headaches, moodiness, gas and acne would crop up.

My body was screaming for attention and I learned to listen. As my body became more sensitive, I was able to tap into my own inherent wisdom. Each time I encountered these symptoms, I assessed whether I needed to adjust my food, cleanse my bowels or use other detox aids like massage, exercise, herbs or simply drinking more water! The tools I used to work through each healing crisis turned into valuable lessons in caring for my body. I continue to use many of these tools today for daily self care or as they’re needed.

The most valuable aid I used during my raw experience was getting my bowels moving more quickly with colon cleansing. When I began to feel bloated, lethargic and moody over a period of days I knew it was high time to schedule a professional colonic! From that I learned that if I’m doing an aggressive cleanse it’s important for me to build monthly colonics right into my program. As soon as I cleanse my intestines this way, I always feel light, happy and energetic again.

Healthy living is about change and flow. Living beings are constantly changing. When we allow the changes to happen and encourage healthy flow (consumption, circulation and elimination) our bodies and minds are healthier, lighter and more vibrant!

I (Jo) have discovered this principle at work in my own body over years of searching for wellness. For several years I tried to “get healthy” by avoiding “bad” foods and restricting my diet and lifestyle more and more. Although I benefited from avoiding sugar and artificial foods, I didn’t really begin to experience health until I incorporated the supportive therapies we recommend here.

My personal favorite is professional bodywork! I received my first professional massage in 2002 when I was pregnant with my daughter. Before that I thought bodywork was some sort of luxury treatment used only for relaxation. While some forms of massage are wonderfully relaxing, I realized that each form of bodywork is a unique and powerful healing tool for removing obstructions and generating flow.

Swedish massage and lymphatic drainage massage are the most “hands on” treatments that work directly on breaking up muscular knots, improving circulation of your blood and stimulating lymph function. Toxic chemicals and emotions can take hold in your muscles. A good massage will stir them up and escort them to your detox organs in newly circulating lymph fluid. Deep breathing throughout your massage and LOTS of water afterward will help the process along.

In my healing journey I’ve also discovered that my emotions and beliefs strongly affect my well being. Old beliefs and stored up emotions need to be released just as much as stored up toxins. Energetic bodywork (mostly stemming from Eastern traditions) that open up the energy channels (meridians) in your body are great for this! Reiki, shiatsu, and acupuncture have really helped me open to the changes of deep healing.

We both enjoy the benefits of yoga, chi kung, gentle exercise and sweating to aid our detoxes and healing. Any type of exercise that gets the body moving will speed up your ability to release toxins. Exercise moves your lymphatic system and produces sweat to escort the waste out of your body. Sitting in a steam room, sauna or sweat lodge is another fantastic way to cleanse your body. An intentional sweating session always brings relief from detox symptoms for us… as long as we remember to re-hydrate afterwards by drinking lots of pure water!

Special Detox Tip: Low Cost Tools for Enhancing your Detox

Wondering how to decrease your detox symptoms without spending a lot of time and money? The dry skin brush and tongue scraper are two of our favorite detox tools. They’re super low cost, easy to use at home and incredibly effective. These simple tools will enhance your detox program and may become part of your daily routine for long term health.

Your skin is your largest elimination organ and a place that toxins can become trapped. Brushing away dead skin cells allows your body to release the stirred up wastes lurking beneath the skin. It also encourages radiant skin, helps to reduce cellulite and stimulates healthy circulation. Visit our skin brushing page to learn more about the benefits, how to properly use a skin brush and where to get one.

When you’re asleep your body is hard at work, cleaning out toxins and sending them off to be eliminated. One of the places they are sent is your tongue. These toxins leave a coating or film on your tongue. Scraping this residue away each morning keeps those toxins from being reabsorbed, reduces bad breath, and enhances the functioning of your taste buds which leads to eating less and enjoying fresh foods more. How does it do that? Find out how along with other benefits of this ancient Ayurvedic technique on our tongue scraping page.
